Creating an Outdoor Sanctuary

Many of us consider our gardens to be sanctuaries; places of beauty and quiet where we can rest, relax and find peace.

As gardening has grown in popularity, so has the idea of outdoor sanctuaries.

Sometimes called wellness gardens, these small and large spaces are where you can seek calm from the trials of everyday life. Think of this as a small room that you are designing as a respite.

'Whether you have a large yard or a small patio, you can create a sanctuary. Start by thinking about the location. How do you want to use it? Do you want a space to read or have a morning coffee? Do you need a comfy chair or a small table? All these elements will dictate the size of the space you need. Keep in mind, a small bistro chair and an antique wooden crate for a table can work.

If possible, define this space from other spaces. Fill some pots with small hedges or grasses that can act as a hedge or a border to give some privacy and separation to the space. Think about the sun. You may not want to be in full sun, and some of your plants may not like it either. Can you locate the space partially under a shade tree, or will you need an umbrella or another form of shade?

Now add some colorful plants that have soothing colors, such as those with greens, blues, lavenders, and soft whites. Some plants that you could use are purple lavender, blue or purple hydrangeas, white peace lilies, and many green foliage plants. Plant them in the ground or place them in pots with accent colors that can add to the soothing decor.

Employ all your senses. As you consider plant colors, also think about fragrance. Choose calming scents such as lavender, lemon balm, rosemary or mint. All these herbs can be grown in pots or in the ground, and when you brush against them, they will release their scent. Think about adding some soothing sounds. A soft wind chime, or small water feature can add another dimension to your experience. Accent lighting can give you more time in the space as the summer days grow shorter. And if you have the space, why not add some ground cover or a small stone path that leads to the space.

Don’t forget to consider changes in weather. We need comfort on rainy and cool days as much as sunny days. Do you need a blanket? Can you fit a small fire pit?

What helps you relax? What do you want to see, hear, and smell to transport you from your hectic day to a place of peace? You don’t need a huge space or a lot of money. Use your imagination and your garden ideas to create a calming space, where you can go to refresh and recharge.
